SPLIT END

“These things you are contemplating – the day will come when not one stone will be left on another, but it will all be torn down.” –Luke 21:6 Jesus predicted the fall of Jerusalem and the end of the world. Matthew, Mark, and Luke put these two predictions together. This is sometimes confusing because we don’t always know whether Jesus was referring to Jerusalem’s fall or the world’s end. However, there are at least two benefits from joining the two predictions. First, since Jesus’ prediction of Jerusalem’s fall was fulfilled in 70 AD just as He said, we have every...

IMPOSSIBLE CHRISTIANITY

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh you.” —Matthew 11:28 The Lord has made living the Christian life humanly impossible. We must be made perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect (Mt 5:48). We must become holy in every aspect of our conduct (1 Pt 1:15) or we will not see God (Heb 12:14), that is, we will not see Jesus face to face in heaven (see 1 Cor 13:12). Furthermore, we must be compassionate as our Father is compassionate (Lk 6:36) and pure as Jesus is pure (1 Jn 3:3)....

“It was to destroy the devil’s works that the Son of God revealed Himself.” —1 John 3:8 The purpose of God becoming man, and therefore the purpose of Christmas, is to destroy the devil’s works. That’s why the anti-Christ denies Christ come in the flesh (1 Jn 4:2-3). That’s why Herod “convulsed” in a violent reaction when he heard about the newborn King of the Jews (see Mt 2:2ff). Herod did not overreact but understood the true meaning of Christmas much better than most people. Christmas is God’s invasion of the devil’s privacy here on earth. Christmas is an attack...

BURIED ALIVE

“Through baptism into His death we were buried with Him, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live a new life.” —Romans 6:4 For those who read this book faithfully and try to go to Mass often, today is a very strange day. We have centered our lives on Jesus in the Eucharist. We live to receive Him; we live because we have received Him. Jesus said: “Let Me solemnly assure you, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood,...
