“JESUS WEPT” (see Lk 19:41)

“Let my eyes stream with tears day and night.” –Jeremiah 14:17 Many people couldn’t care less about the condition of the world, the state of the Church, the destruction of human lives, the breakdown of marriage and family, etc. They just stare at the TV and try to escape from reality through constant indulgence in petty pleasures. We should love the Lord and other people enough to pray: “Let my eyes stream with tears day and night, without rest, over the great destruction which overwhelms the virgin daughter of my people, over her incurable wound” (Jer 14:17). When Jesus saw...

WEED LOVERS

“Do you want us to go out and pull them up?” –Matthew 13:28 The farmer in Jesus’ parable of the wheat and weeds says something I’ve never heard a farmer or gardener say before. He says that you shouldn’t pull up the weeds because “you might take the wheat along with them” (Mt 13:29). It seems that Jesus’ wheat and weeds are much more intertwined than those of other people. This is a scary thought. It’s bad enough to put up with the weeds much less having to be closely connected to them. Jesus doesn’t want us intertwined with the...

PERSEVERANCE

“I will rise then and go about the city; in the streets and crossings I will seek Him Whom my heart loves.” –Song of Songs 3:2 When we think of Mary Magdalene, we recall her intense love for Jesus. She received this love from the Holy Spirit (Gal 5:22; Rm 5:5). She received the Holy Spirit in such a powerful way because of her perseverance. Just as Elisha received a double portion of Elijah’s spirit by persevering in sticking with him (2 Kgs 2:1ff), so Mary Magdalene received the Spirit’s gift of love through her perseverance. When almost all Jesus’...

WHO IS REALLY ON TRIAL?

“God Himself is the Judge.” –Psalm 50:6 In all three eucharistic readings today, a type of courtroom scene is portrayed. The prophet Micah announces a cosmic court session. “The Lord has a plea against His people, and He enters into trial with” them (Mi 6:2). He demands to know why His people have turned away from Him, despite all the marvelous deeds and loving provisions He has bestowed on them. God says to His people: “Answer Me!” (Mi 6:3) The psalm response continues the cosmic trial scene. God “summons the heavens from above, and the earth, to the trial of...

Today, we pray for those who have abandoned their faith

Lord Jesus, today we bring to You Christians who have left Your fold by wilful choice. Lord, we pray for our dear ones who do not want to recognise You or worship You as God. We bring to You their doubts, anxieties, confusion and pain. We trust in Your mercy that they will be brought back and redeemed like pure silver. A prayer also for those of us who are standing by longingly and waiting for their return. Give all of us Your power, grace and strength. Amen.
