THE JUSTICE OF GOD

“When these things begin to happen, stand up straight and raise your heads, for your ransom is near at hand.”—Luke 21:28

Today’s Scriptures seem gloomy and stark at first reading. But reading them with an eye toward justice helps. “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She has become a dwelling place for demons. She is a cage for every unclean spirit, a cage for every filthy and disgusting bird” (Rv 18:2). “A powerful angel picked up a stone like a huge millstone and hurled it into the sea and said: ‘Babylon the great city shall be cast down like this, with violence, and nevermore be found’ ” (Rv 18:21).

It’s frightening to think of the first reading and the Gospel from the viewpoint of divine punishment of human beings. However, when viewed through the lens of divine justice toward those who oppress human beings, we find encouragement. So think of God overthrowing the secular culture of death and the demons who stir up deceit, lies, and a mindset of hatred. Seeing them “thrown down” and “never being found again” is tremendously encouraging. We have long prayed “Thy Kingdom come” (see Mt 6:10). To think of God arising and acting powerfully to overthrow the abortion industry, the godless secular culture, etc. is a cause to celebrate. Pray daily for God’s justice to come. Come, King Jesus, in power and justice!

Prayer: Father, may the reign of Christ as King of our society come swiftly in our nation and our world.

Promise: “Enter His gates with thanksgiving, His courts with praise; Give thanks to Him; bless His name.” —Ps 100:4

Praise: Reading both the daily Scripture readings and praying the daily news has kept Thomas encouraged in his faith.
