“Lord, You Can Use My Boat”

“Nice boat.” Simon looked up from mending his nets to see a tall man touching his boat. It was Jesus, whom hed first met down in Judea where Simon had been listening to John the Baptists teaching. Jesus himself was a teacher these days, Simon had heard. Jesus was fingering the joinery of Simons boat, admiring the handiwork. “Very smooth,” he said. “Benjamin the boatmaker finished it last fall,” said Simon. “Last boat he made before he died.” Jesus ran his hand over the planks along the side of the craft. “It looks tight,” he said, “Mortise and tenon joinery....

Life is a Potluck Dinner

When I was a boy our church would sometimes have potluck dinners in the church basement. Tables would run from wall to wall as sixty people would crowd in for the feast. The serving table would always be groaning under the weight of all the different dishes people brought. There would be baked ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, rolls, lasagna, green beans, brown beans, corn bread, pies, and cakes ready to fill every stomach and warm every heart. The Forgotten Light

Turn left, right, or out of sight I realize I am lost I scan around for some light And debate all the costs As I stumble on my own I doubt of my findings For great divine light to show Me to understanding The emerald trees hide my way And I just cannot see Also as the clouds today Decide to rain on me I trudge through the dreary wood As if it could not help Lift my spirit as it should Out of crying itself My tears melt into the rain I wonder of some warmth To illuminate my...

Hanging from the rungs at the top are bird-feeders. The arbor is beautiful to see, and undoubtedly a source of great pleasure to its owners. Nearby sits a second arbor. Almost identical to the first,...

My kitchen table was covered with papers. It was the end of the month and I was trying to get all of my paperwork done and taken to the office on time. I sat down in a chair, picked up my pen, and started writing on the first page. Just then a flash of motion caught my eye. I looked out my window and saw my neighbors’ white beagle standing on my back porch. She had gotten free from her yard and was having fun running loose. Knowing my neighbors were at work I looked at my paperwork, sighed, and...
