“Why are you here, Elijah?” –1 Kings 19:9 The mighty prophet Elijah had more confidence in Queen Jezebel’s wicked fury than he did in his own strength. Jezebel had sworn to eliminate Elijah and sent assassins to hunt him down and kill him (1 Kgs 19:2-3). Elijah had stood as strong as a “wall of brass” against the whole nation (see Jer 1:18), but he was not able to stand up to one furious, powerful, vengeful woman. Elijah fled the country, walking over forty days to put as much distance as possible between him and Jezebel’s assassins (1 Kgs 19:8)....

“You have heard the commandment imposed on your forefathers, ‘You shall not commit murder; every murderer shall be liable to judgment.’ What I say to you is…” –Matthew 5:21-22 Jesus has set the highest standards in history. For example, we are not to grow angry with our brothers and sisters in Christ (Mt 5:22). We are not to act, speak, or even think in anger (Mt 5:22). Furthermore, we must take the responsibility to be reconciled with those who are angry with us – even if we are not angry with them (Mt 5:23). Moreover, we must do this right...

“How long will you straddle the issue? If the Lord is God, follow Him; if Baal, follow him.” –1 Kings 18:21 The Lord died on the cross for love of us. He is Love (1 Jn 4:16), and He wants us to love Him with all our hearts (Dt 6:5). Jesus calls us to committed covenant-love. Any halfheartedness or lukewarmness nauseates Him (Rv 3:16). He calls us to total love. The Lord sends fire (see 1 Kgs 18:38) to burn away the sinfulness, selfishness, idolatry, and spiritual adultery which contradicts the pure love for Him to which He has called...

“I have designated a widow there to provide for you.” –1 Kings 17:9 The Lord designated a widow to provide for Elijah during a famine. The Lord chose someone to provide for Elijah who was so poor that she and her son were about to die of starvation (1 Kgs 17:12). The Lord continues to designate people to provide for His Church, His poor, and all of His other ministries. Also, the Lord continues to designate not only rich people to fund His Church but also very poor people. These poor people don’t see how they can support the Church...

“Ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the stream.” –1 Kings 17:6 The Lord is raising up new Elijahs to conquer the false prophets (see 1 Kgs 18:19ff) and call our society to repent. To strengthen these new Elijahs, the Lord is calling them aside where they will drink daily from the life-giving waters of the Spirit (see Rv 22:17).
