ஏழைகள் என்றால் யார்? ஏழைகளுக்கு, விவிலியத்திலே இரண்டு வார்த்தைகள், கிரேக்க மொழியில் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது.   தங்களுடைய உழைப்பை மட்டுமே நம்பி இருப்பவர்கள். இவர்கள் தினமும் உழைப்பதில் கிடைக்கும் வருமானத்தைக் கொண்டு, தங்கள் வாழ்க்கையை ஓட்டுபவர்கள். தங்களுக்கென்று, வேறு எதுவும் கிடையாது. உழைப்பை நம்பி வாழ்க்கையை நடத்துபவர்கள். Pவழமழள என்றால், தங்களுடைய ஒருவேளை உணவுக்காக கூட மற்றவர்களுடைய தயவை எதிர்பார்த்து இருப்பவர்கள். மனிதன் என்கிற தங்களுடைய மாண்பை இழந்து, மற்றவர்களிடம் கையேந்துபவர்கள். ஒருவேளை உணவு கிடைத்தாலும் உண்டு, இல்லையென்றால் பட்டினி என்ற நிலையோடு வாழ்பவர்கள். மத்தேயு நற்செய்தியிலே, இந்த இரண்டாவதாக பொருள்படக்கூடிய ஏழையைத்தான் இங்கே குறிப்பிடுகிறார். அதாவது, ஒருவேளை உணவுக்காகக்கூட, மற்றவர்களை எதிர்பார்த்து, சார்ந்து இருக்கக்கூடிய ஏழைகளை, இங்கே கூறுகிறார். அப்படியானால், ஏழையரின் உள்ளத்தவர்கள் என்றால் என்ன பொருள்: யாரெல்லாம், தங்களுடைய செல்வம், திறமை, அழகு, பதவி, பட்டங்கள் மீது நம்பிக்கை வைக்காமல், கடவுள் ஒருவர்தான் எங்களுடைய வாழ்க்கை, கடவுள் தான் எனக்கு எல்லாமே...
