BAD PARENTING

“Israel loved Joseph best of all his sons.” —Genesis 37:3 Israel, also known as Jacob, deserved the “Good Housekeeping” seal of disapproval. He was a terrible parent. He favored his son, Joseph, and made him a special robe without giving his other children anything comparable (Gn 37:3). Jacob let the communication break down in his family to the point that Joseph’s brothers “hated him so much that they would not even greet him” (Gn 37:4). Jacob was so out of touch with his family’s feelings that he unknowingly sent Joseph into a situation in which he was almost murdered by...

HARD HEART, BURN

“If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if one should rise from the dead.” —Luke 16:31 The human heart is so twisted and deceitful (Jer 17:9) that many of us, even in a world of instant communication, do not notice hundreds of millions of starving people at our doorsteps (see Lk 16:20). We have made our hearts so hardened that, even if someone were raised from the dead to warn us, we would not repent (Lk 16:31). If we ever change, it will be through God’s Word — from Moses’ Pentateuch...

THE SERVICE STATIONS OF THE CROSS

“Such is the case with the Son of Man Who has come, not to be served by others, but to serve, to give His own life as a ransom for the many.” —Matthew 20:28 Most people recognize they have an inner desire to serve others. Millions are serving the poor, the sick, children, the elderly, the homeless, etc. At Christmas time, many people are even more conscious of their need to serve. However, service has a tendency to get out of hand. It feels good to serve, but it also hurts to serve. For example, Jeremiah was not only unappreciated...

THE DELUGE OF GUILT

“Come now, let us set things right, says the Lord.” —Isaiah 1:18 In our secular humanistic culture, many people, even Christians, have unformed and deformed consciences. They have not been “trained by practice to distinguish good from evil” (Heb 5:14). “One sees in them men without conscience, without loyalty, without affection, without pity” (Rm 1:31). These people commit many serious sins, but do not feel guilty because they are so spiritually blinded and immature. However, this condition of serious sin, minimal guilt, and undeveloped consciences will not last indefinitely. Reality finally sets in, and they come to realize that they...

PERMISSIVENESS AND COMPASSION

“Be compassionate, as your Father is compassionate.” —Luke 6:36 Today’s readings speak of an ever-increasing awareness of sin. Sin eventually results in being “brought very low” (Ps 79:8). Nations and people that rebel against God (see Dn 9:9) will eventually reap the harvest of sin, that is, disaster and death (see Rm 6:23). As Jesus says, the measure that rebels measure with will eventually be measured right back to them (Lk 6:38). In the secular culture, to stand up against sin and immorality is considered an act of “hate.” Yet it is not love to allow (let alone encourage) a...
