மத்தேயுவின் இயற்பெயர் லேவி என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. இதனுடைய அர்த்தம் “சேர்க்கை” என்பதாகும். எபிரேய மொழியில் மத்தேயு என்றால் “கடவுளின் கொடை“ என்று அர்த்தம் சொல்கிறார்கள். திருத்தூதர்களில் ஒருவரான அந்திரேயா வழியாக, இவர் அறிமுகமாகிறார். மற்ற திருத்தூதர்கள் சாதாரணமானவர்கள். ஆனால், அவர்களை விட செல்வத்திலும், அதிகாரத்திலும் உயா்ந்த வரிவசூலிக்கக்கூடியவராக மத்தேயு இருக்கிறார். கப்பாநாகும் அருகில் இருக்கிற கலிலேயா கடற்கரை அருகில் தான், வரிவசூலித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தார். உரோமையர்களுக்காகப் பணிசெய்து கொண்டிருந்ததாலும், வரிவசூலிக்கக்கூடிய தொழிலைச் செய்து வந்ததாலும், மக்களின் கோபத்திற்கும், வெறுப்பிற்கும் ஆளானவர். ஆனாலும், இயேசுவின் அழைப்பை ஏற்று, அந்த மக்களுக்கே பணிபுரிவதற்கு முன்வருகிறார். இவர் எத்தியோப்பியா, பெர்ஷியா, பார்த்தியா, எகிப்து நாடுகளுக்குச் சென்று, வேதம் போதித்ததாக பாரம்பரியம் கூறுகிறது. எகிப்து நாட்டில் அரசாண்ட அரசனின் மகனை உயிருடன் எழுப்பினார். தொழுநோயால் தாக்கப்பட்ட அந்த நாட்டு இளவரசி இபிஜினாவையும் குணப்படுத்தினார். மத்தேயு தனது நற்செய்தியை யூதர்களுக்கு எழுதுகிறார். பழைய ஏற்பாடு நூலை முழுமையாகக் கற்றுக்கொண்டதை, அவர் எழுதுகிற...

ஆண்டவர் எனக்குச் செவிசாய்த்தார்

ஆண்டவர் இரக்கமுள்ளவர். எவ்வளவு பெரிய தவறு செய்தாலும், உண்மையான மனமாற்றத்தோடு திரும்பி வந்தால், நிச்சயம் கடவுள் நம்மை ஏற்றுக்கொள்வார் என்பதை, அனுபவப்பூர்வமாக வெளிப்படுத்தக்கூடிய ஒரு பாடல் தான் இந்த திருப்பாடல் (திருப்பாடல் 116: 1 – 2, 3 – 4, 5 – 6, 8 – 9). இறைவனிடத்தில் நம்பிக்கை உணர்வோடு நாம் மன்றாடுகிறபோது, இறைவனின் அருளும், ஆசீரும் நமக்கு நிறைவாகக் கிடைக்கும் என்பதை, இந்த திருப்பாடல் நமக்கு வெளிக்காட்டுவதாக அமைகிறது. துன்பத்திலும், துயரத்திலும், குற்ற உணர்ச்சியிலும் சாவை எதிர்நோக்கியிருக்கிற மனிதன் என்ன செய்வதென்று தெரியாமல் திணறிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறான். சாவை எதிர்கொள்ளவும் பயந்து குழப்பமான நிலையில் புலம்பிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறான். இப்படிப்பட்ட சூழ்நிலையில், அவன் கடவுளைத் தேடுகிறான். அவனிடத்தில் இப்போது இருப்பது தான் செய்த தவறுகளுக்காக மனம் வருந்திய நிலை. ஆனால், அவன் ஆச்சரியப்படக்கூடிய அளவுக்கு கடவுள் அவனை ஏற்றுக்கொள்கிறார். அவனுக்கு தன்னுடை மன்னிப்பை வழங்கி, அவனுக்கு பிரச்சனைகளிலிருந்து விடுதலை கொடுக்கிறார்....
